Financing Grad School
While the Linguistics Department provides a full-funding package for all of our doctoral students, we do not provide internal funding packages for students in our Master’s programs. This holds for many, if not most, Master’s programs in linguistics across the US where internal funding sources are limited. We list a variety of external funding sources for graduate students on our Funding for Graduate Students page.
At Georgetown, graduate tuition is charged by credit hour. Note that the tuition cost of your Master’s degree in the Department of Linguistics is determined by the number of credits required to graduate. The MS programs in Applied, Theoretical and Sociolinguistics all require 36 credit hours to graduate. The MS in Computational Linguistics and the MA in Language & Communication each provide the option of a 30-credit program (10 classes) or a 24-credit program (8 classes plus a Master’s Thesis), resulting in a lower overall tuition cost. Please refer to the Office of Student Financial Services’ Graduate Program Cost of Attendance to view tuition cost based on total credit hours.
The Department has no merit-based scholarships or teaching assistantships to offer our Master’s students. However, a limited number of paid graduate assistantships are available within the Department in the Assessment and Evaluation Language Resource Center (AELRC) as well in diverse units across the university. Many of our Master’s students find work in the Center for Social Justice or the Center for New Designs in Learning and Scholarship (CNDLS). These and other positions are advertised through Hoya Staffing or through our Department email list (GULinguist).
