GU STARTALK 2023
GU STARTALK: Task-based Training for Critical Language Teachers, funded by a grant from the NSA, trained 25 K-16 teachers of critical languages (Arabic, Chinese, Korean, Persian and Russian) in the summer of 2023.
The goal of this program is to provide teachers with training and experience in Task-Based Language Teaching (TBLT) , including its grounding in second language acquisition (SLA) research, and how to leverage it to meet the needs of critical language learners. Teachers will first complete virtual pre-camp modules on tools, tips, and research-based practices for TBLT. They will hear from experts in the field of SLA through videos and webinars. Then, the in-person summer camp will provide a Teacher Learning Community via hands-on task and lesson planning, curricular sequencing and micro-teaching experiences, receiving individualized feedback from the leaders and instructors. After the camp, teachers will virtually pair with mentors to put their learning into practice through video and written reflections.
