Linguistics Professor Andrea Tyler's Book Awarded Prize by British Association

SEPTEMBER 10, 2013 – THE BRITISH ASSOCIATION FOR Applied Linguistics (BAAL) has honored Georgetown linguistics professor Andrea Tyler with the 2013 BAAL Book Prize for her work on the application of cognitive linguistics.

In Cognitive Linguistics and Language Learning: Theoretical Basics and Experimental Evidence (Routledge, 2012), Tyler explores ways that cognitive linguistics can illuminate and facilitate language research and training.

The first part of the book introduces the basics of cognitive linguistic theory to second language teachers and researchers. The second part provides evidence of the theory’s usefulness in teaching and other applications.

BAAL Book Prize reviewers noted that the book “is a very good example of a scholarly work that has immense practical value.”

“It is very rare that a book provides a deeply intellectually satisfying conceptual discussion on a complex subject,” they wrote.

Tyler, who also co-wrote The Semantics of English Prepositions: Spatial Scenes, Embodied Meaning, and Cognition (Cambridge University Press, 2003), and is co-organizing the 2014 Georgetown University Round Table on Languages and Linguistics set for March.
