PhD student collaborates on Nanticoke textbook

PhD student Keith Cunningham collaborated with Nanticoke tribal member and Rutgers Anthropology PhD student Karelle Hall to create a textbook to teach the Nanticoke language for young learners. Nanticoke is an Eastern Algonquian language formerly spoken on the Eastern Shore of Maryland and Delaware. Listen to their interview on a recent episode of “The Tongue Unbroken”, a podcast about indigenous language revitalization hosted by Dr. X̱ʼunei Lance Twitchell of the University of Alaska Southeast. In the episode, Karelle and Keith discuss their methodology and motivations for reconstructing the Nanticoke language, which has been dormant since 1859.
