2009-2010 Linguistics Graduate Student Travel Awards
Presenting research at academic conferences is a crucial part of your intellectual and professional development, and in recent years the Department has worked hard to support your travel to conferences. A portion of the Department's budget has been allocated to defray the cost of graduate students' conference travel.
If you are presenting a paper at a conference and would like to request reimbursement for some of your travel expenses, please do the following:
Apply to the Graduate School. This is a requirement for subsequently requesting travel funding from the Department. Their fall semester deadline is October 1, 2009 and spring semester deadline is January 30, 2010. Please review their website for their application requirements.
You do not need to receive Graduate School support, but you must apply.
By January 11, 2010, but no earlier than February 15, 2010, submit your request for departmental travel funding/reimbursement to Erin Esch (ICC 451) who will compile the material and forward it to the Chair of the Linguistics Department.
The request should include the following:
a. Cover letter outlining conference travel expenses. Only airfare, hotel and conference registration (not meals and taxi costs,e.g.) can be considered. You must include copies of your receipts;
b. Documentation of your presentation (copy of letter of acceptance or program listing); please specify if you are sole presenter or a co-presenter;
c. Amount of travel expense support received from other sources.
If the conference for which you are requesting funding/reimbursement is after February 15, 2010 but before June 30, 2010, please provide an estimate of airfare and hotel expenses, with documentation. The Department can only reimburse for expenses actually incurred, so you will have to submit receipts after your travel.
After February 15, the Department will divide the available funds across the requests.
We are very proud of how our students represent our Department to the field of linguistics through your conference presentations and are committed to supporting graduate student travel to the fullest extent possible.
