Oral Examination
During the semester following the completion of all Ph.D. coursework, students must pass an oral examination. All other preliminary requirements, including the Qualifying Review, the Second Qualifying Paper (QP2) and the Ph.D. language requirement, must be satisfied before the Oral Examination may be scheduled. The exam will focus primarily on topics related to the student's proposed dissertation. Upon the recommendation of the examining board, a student who fails the examination may resit the examination once. Students who fail the examination are not allowed to continue in the Ph.D. program.
Below are the two forms that you are required to complete in preparation for your Ph.D. Oral Examination. You need to submit your scheduling form to the Graduate Program Assistant (GPA) two weeks before the scheduled exam date. With the submission of your scheduling form, you must also provide the GPA with a copy of your approved problem statement. Upon receiving the scheduling form, the GPA will reserve a room and send a letter to you and all your committee members confirming the scheduled oral examination.
Please be sure to review the Graduate Student Handbook (for the year in which you entered) for additional details and the Calendar of Important Dates for submission deadlines.
