Department of Linguistics

In order to continue in the Ph.D. program, all doctoral students must pass a Qualifying Review at the midpoint of their Georgetown career, but not later than the fourth semester of enrollment. At this time students are required to have completed at least the Masters' level distribution requirements, but not necessarily the 9 distribution requirements necessary for the Ph.D. degree. It is, however, highly recommended that students not leave the majority of the Ph.D. distribution requirements until the end of their coursework. Doing so could impede their ability to enroll in advanced courses and research seminars, both of which may have distribution requirements as their prerequisites. Consult the Linguistics Graduate Student Handbook for concentration distribution requirements. Students must submit a Qualifying Dossier consisting of their transcript, three letters of evaluation from Georgetown faculty, and the First Qualifying Paper (QP1). Reviews are conducted at mid-semester by faculty committees in each concentration. Students who fail the review are not allowed to continue in the Ph.D. program, but may be awarded a M.S. degree upon completing all degree requirements for the M.S.

Please note: Students are not eligible to receive a Master of Arts in Teaching in passing nor a Master of Arts in Language and Communication in passing.

The semester in which you must submit your Qualifying Review Dossier, you need to get a 'Qualifying Packet' from the Graduate Program Assistant which includes the following forms:

1) Request for Qualifying Review

2) Three Faculty Recommendation Forms

When your dossier is complete, you submit your packet to the Graduate Program Assistant. The packet must include the following items:

1) Completed 'Request for Qualifying Review' Form

2) Three Completed Faculty Recommendation Forms

3) Academic Transcript: You can submit an unofficial copy that can be printed from your Student Access account: http://limited.georgetown.edu/StudentAccess/

4) Qualifying Paper
