Master of Science
M.S. students are admitted to one of four concentrations: Applied Linguistics, Computational Linguistics, Sociolinguistics, or Theoretical Linguistics. Roughly half the student's coursework will be in the concentration, with the remainder consisting of departmental Core courses (9 credits) and electives. All M.S. students are required to demonstrate knowledge of one non-native language. A grade point average of 3.0 is required to maintain good standing in the M.S. program. Although the M.S. in Applied, Socio or Theoretical Linguistics requires 36 credits and a Master's Research Paper, the M.S. in Computational Linguistics requires 24 credits and a Master's Thesis. To complete a Master's Thesis, the student must submit a proposal to his/her advisor and to the Graduate School. The thesis will be mentored by the faculty advisor with or without additional readers. Upon completion, the Master's Thesis must be deposited with the Graduate School. (Students currently enrolled in the previous 36-credit M.S. in CLI should consult with their advisors.) The Masters of Arts with a concentration in Language and Communication (M.L.C.) also requires a Master's Thesis.
Further details concerning requirements, standards and procedures for the M.S. are given in the Linguistics Graduate Student Handbook and the Graduate Bulletin.
